He studied economics and music (jazz bass) in Leipzig (Germany). In 2016, Dr. Bretschneider received his Ph.D. in economics from the University of Leipzig with a thesis in the field of environmental economics, analyzing the call for a human right to water from an institutional economics perspective.

Dr. Bretschneider is a member of a research project called “The Organization and Regulation of the German Security Market,” funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The objective of the project is to identify how to draw the line between public and private provision of security services from an economic theory perspective. It also looks at how one can explain the considerable increase in demand for security services in recent years.
