Director, Society, Culture & Politics Program

General Summary/Purpose/Responsibilities

Research

  • Work closely with AICGS Senior Staff to develop and implement a medium-term (1-2 years) and long-term research agenda for the AICGS Society, Culture, and Politics Program (SCP), identifying concrete areas of inquiry and a pool of outside experts who could participate in such projects, potentially including areas such as migration, integration, reconciliation, and German political dynamics.
  • Exercise responsibility for the Society, Culture, and Politics Program budget.
  • In cooperation with the Director of Programs and Grants, coordinate and oversee the work of AICGS SCP Program research projects; monitoring the progress of each project; and participating in project sessions and meetings.
  • In close cooperation with the Director of Programs and Grants, direct the fellowship programs pertaining to the SCP Program, propose fellows and provide guidance to them.
  • Initiate and support the development of SCP Program grant proposals to corporations, foundations, and individuals, in collaboration with the Director of Programs and Grants, and with other AICGS Program Directors as appropriate.
  • Maintain active relationships with corporate contributions officers and foundation program officers related to the SCP Program.
  • Work closely with the Director of Finance, Operations and Development on financial and fundraising aspects pertaining to the SCP Program.
  • Work closely with the AICGS Non-resident Fellows, a group of external policy and scholarly experts, to strengthen the AICGS Research Program agenda.
  • Attend weekly full-staff meetings and participate in other activities of the Institute as appropriate.

Writing/Outreach

  • Assume research and writing responsibilities for select AICGS articles and publications/The AICGS Advisor.
  • Where applicable, conduct research and writing of scholarly work to be published outside AICGS.
  • Represent AICGS at meetings and chair AICGS events as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD in an appropriate discipline.
  • Significant experience in conducting research projects relevant to scholarly and policy concerns.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in conducting symposia and workshops is also desirable.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • German Language Proficiency is required – spoken and written.
