State parliamentary elections will be taking place in Berlin this Sunday, September 18th, and polls by Forschungsgruppe Wahlen show that Chancellor Merkel and her CDU-FDP coalition could take yet another hit. While the election is expected to produce some continuity, with Mayor Klaus Wowereit winning re-election and his SPD party staying atop the polls, an expected decrease in support for the the Left (Die Linke) could produce a new SPD-Green Party governing coalition (red-green). Also of particular note will be how low support for the FDP drops on Sunday and if the Pirate Party, seeking their first ever seats in Parliament, can overtake them, as well as if the NPD comes close to the support level is garnered two weeks ago in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
