On November 4, AICGS held its 15th Annual Global Leadership Award Dinner at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City.

The Institute was honored to present this year's award to two outstanding leaders: The Honorable James A. Baker, III, the 61st U.S. Secretary of State, and Dr. Manfred Bischoff, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Daimler Group.

Dr. Manfred Bischoff has devoted his professional life to corporate leadership around the world. Having spent most of his career affiliated with Daimler, he was also the first Chairman of the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company (EADS) and has served on many international boards furthering global cooperation and collaboration.

This year's awards are scheduled in a month in which we mark the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Among the many contributions he has made in public service, as the 61st Secretary of State, The Honorable James A. Baker, III, was instrumental in managing the process which led to German unification a year later and set the foundation for the end of the Cold War. He has continued to be called on for his leadership in addressing the nation's challenges at home and abroad.

AICGS inaugurated the Global Leadership Award in 1994 as part of the Institute's mission to foster stronger ties between the United States and Germany. The Award recognizes the achievements of business leaders who, through their personal and professional accomplishments, have helped strengthen the close partnership between Germany and the United States.

The Award is presented in the fall at a gala dinner in New York which is also the Institute's principal annual fundraising event. Guests at the gala include hundreds of top-level corporate executives, political figures, diplomats, NGO leaders, and members of the academic community, making this event a "celebration" of German-American partnership in the truest sense.

The gala dinner is underwritten principally by individual and corporate sponsors. Net proceeds from the event provide a substantial portion of the funding for the Institute's scholarly programs. Sponsors receive invitations to the Dinner, on-site acknowledgements, complimentary advertising opportunities, and other benefits. Sponsorship fees are tax-deductible to the full extent of the law in both Germany and the United States. Sponsorship is also an effective way for a company to publicize its support for a stronger German-American partnership before an important audience of corporate and government leaders who care deeply about this relationship.
