Mr. Roland Hiemann

Roland Hiemann is currently a DAAD/AICGS Fellow at the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies while on leave from the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP) in Berlin, where he serves as a research assistant. He is also working on his doctoral thesis dealing with the domestic decision-making of U.S. North Korea Policy. Mr. Hiemann has published articles and reports on various aspects of nuclear non-proliferation.
While he is at AICGS, Mr. Hiemann will analyze the prospects and limits for transatlantic non-proliferation cooperation, taking North Korea as a case in point. To be sure, since 2002 the European Union has not played a significant role in efforts to halt North Korea's nuclear ambitions. However, recent changes in U.S. policy as well as progress in the denuclearization negotiations of the Six-Party Talks give reason to reevaluate Europe's possible contributions to non-proliferation efforts toward Pyongyang in the future. Against this backdrop, Mr. Hiemann will discuss potential EU approaches in the transatlantic context of a balanced alignment with U.S. policy.

Mr. Hiemann will be AICGS until December 15, 2007. To contact him while he is at AICGS, please click here.
