In this week's At Issue, Executive Director Dr. Jackson Janes discusses the G8 Conference and questions its necessity in a changing world. Dr. Janes argues however that such cooperative efforts should not be confined to two days a year, but rather should be conducted year round.

Over the past few months, Russia has looked to re-exert its influence on international relations, often times in a not-so-cooperative manner. On May 2, 2007, AICGS held a conference on "German and American Policies Toward Russia: Transatlantic and Global Dimensions," featuring Russia scholars from both sides of the Atlantic. On May 13, the city-state of Bremen held its elections, resulting in a win for the SPD and a new coalition with the Greens, ending a twelve-year coalition with the CDU. Former DAAD/AICGS Fellow Professor Dr. Karl-Rudolf Korte analyzes the outcome and discusses what this result means for the greater state of German political party interaction. Former DAAD/AICGS Fellow Alexander Ritzmann writes about the thwarted terrorist attack at Fort Dix and how this attack should change some common perceptions of what a terrorist's background typically is. Ritzmann concludes that the myths about the socio-economic root causes of terrorism can no longer be furthered, as doing so could only lead to greater trouble later on.

After British Prime Minister Tony Blair steps down at the end of June, what can be expected of British-German relations under the tenure of his expected successor, Gordon Brown?  Dr. Simon Green and Professor William Paterson, Deputy Director and Director respectively of the Institute for German Studies at the University of Birmingham, UK, and regular contributors to AICGS, examine areas of potential cooperation and of possible conflict between the two nations and their leaders, concluding that it might not take long for discord to arise.

After Nicolas Sarkozy's victory in the recent French elections, AICGS is pleased to host a roundtable discussion on June 6, 2007, with Ambassador Fritjof von Nordenskjöld and Dr. Simon Serfaty to discuss the implications of the French elections for French-German-American relations.

On April 20, 2007, AICGS held a workshop in Berlin on "Transatlantic Perspectives on Religion and Politics in Global Affairs."  Panelists from five countries - France, Germany, Poland, Turkey, and the United States - shared views on the growing influence of religion in global politics, the importance of Diaspora populations and a globalized media, and how to build a global dialogue on religion and politics.
