The recent rail strikes in Germany caught many by surprise, partially paralyzing the German economy in the process. Dr. Stephen Silvia, professor of international economic relations at American University and a member of the AICGS Senior Advisory Council, explains the reasoning behind the strikes and suggests that more strikes are likely to occur in the future.

On Thursday, November 29, AICGS will co-host with The German Marshall Fund of the United States an afternoon discussion on the timely issue of international law and counterterrorism efforts. Speakers at this event will be Dr. Georg Witschel, Head of the Legal Department at the German Foreign Office and Legal Advisor to the Federal Government on international law, and Professor Ruth Wedgwood, Edward B. Burling Professor of International Law and Diplomacy and Director of the International Law and Organizations Program at the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University. On October 9, 2007, AICGS hosted a workshop on "NGOs, International Security, and Global Governance." The workshop, generously supported by the Dräger-Foundation, brought together various policy experts with leading representatives of non-governmental-organizations (NGOs) to discuss the growing role of NGOs in facing global challenges. On November 1, 2007, AICGS hosted a workshop on "Polish-German Relations after Polish Elections." Dr. Eugeniusz Smolar, President of the Center for International Relations in Warsaw, and AICGS' Senior Fellow in Residence Dr. Lily Gardner Feldman discussed the results of Poland's October 21 election and what steps the likely new Prime Minister Donald Tusk will take with regard to solidifying relations with its western neighbor.
