For the past week, Chancellor Angela Merkel has traveled to China and Japan seeking to strengthen German relations with the two major Asian nations. The 2007 Economic Report of the Federal Republic of Germany was recently released, and former DAAD/AICGS Fellow Dr. Sebastian Dullien writes in response that despite some negative reports from other economists, Germany is on a good path to increase its medium term growth performance.

Announcements

On September 12, 2007, AICGS will host a presentation of a unique and innovative method of political participation and mass communication developed at the Free University of Berlin and the University of Applied Science Brandenburg. "Straight2thecandidates.com" is a grass-roots project run in cooperation with students and scholars from various universities in Germany and the United States. At this event, the idea behind the website and its possible impact upon the election will be examined, as well as the role of new web-based media outlets in politics.

AICGS would like to announce that the Robert Bosch Foundation Fellowship Program is now accepting applications. The Program provides young American professionals (ages 23-34) with two high-level work placements in the federal government and private sector in Germany. Candidates are competitively chosen from the fields of business administration, economics, journalism, law, political science and public policy. Applications must be received no later than October 15, 2007, for the program beginning in September 2008.

The Association for the Study of German Politics agreed at its May 2007 meeting to merge with the U.S. German Politics Association in order to form a new International Association for the Study of German Politics. This new association will be unique in bringing together scholars from Europe and North America into a common collaborative academic network.

AICGS is now accepting nominations for the 2007 DAAD Prize for Distinguished Scholarship in German and European Studies. This year's prize will be awarded in the field of the Humanities; the winner will be awarded at the Institute's annual Global Leadership Award Dinner on November 15, 2007.

AICGS is seeking an Associate Director to serve as deputy to the Executive Director with management and oversight responsibilities for the Institute's general operation and staff and in particular for the AICGS Research Program.

AICGS is now accepting applications for the Spring 2008 session of the DAAD/AICGS Fellowship program. The program is designed to bring scholars and specialists working on Germany, Europe, and/or transatlantic relations to AICGS for research stays of two months each.
