AICGS Advisor - August 3, 2007

Analysis

As the U.S. looks for partners in the Middle East, the question arises of how to deal with Syria. Jon Alterman, director of the Middle East program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies and an AICGS Policy Report author, argues that cooperation with Syria is important for the region, and that the U.S. should 'manage' its relations with Syria very delicately. This article originally appeared in the July 27 edition of The Washington Post. Mr. Alterman wrote an AICGS Policy Report on the subject of U.S.-EU cooperation in the Middle East in 2003, a subject that is still relevant today.

Ambassador J.D. Bindenagel, Vice President at DePaul University and a member of the AICGS Senior Advisory Council, writes that the peace between Jordan and Israel offers a glimpse of hope for the future of the Middle East and connects the situation to his time at the State Department in Cold War-era East Berlin. This article originally appeared in the July 23 edition of The Globalist online magazine.

In Issue Brief #16, "Religion and World Politics: A Structural Approach," Timothy Byrnes examines three religious communities and their relationships with the processes of European integration, concluding that religion, as a political force, will be more likely to hinder the further integration of the European continent than to advance it.

Frequent contributor Bruce Stokes of The National Journal writes about President Bush's lame duck status and how it is effecting global perception of the U.S. as well as U.S. foreign policy. Using figures from the recent Pew Global Attitudes Project poll, Stokes underlines the challenge that the Bush administration is facing as it approaches the conclusion of its term. This article originally appeared in the July 28, 2007, National Journal.

Announcements

On August 20, 2007, AICGS will host a presentation of a unique and innovative method of political participation and mass communication developed at the Free University of Berlin and the University of Applied Science Brandenburg. "Straight2thecandidates.com" is a grass-roots project run in cooperation with students and scholars from various universities in Germany and the United States. At this event, the idea behind the website and its possible impact upon the election will be examined, as well as the role of new web-based media outlets in politics.
This event has been postponed.

On July 26, 2007, AICGS hosted an event with former DAAD/AICGS Fellow Alexander Ritzmann, Senior Fellow at the European Foundation for Democracy, titled "The Myths About Terrorists." At this event, Mr. Ritzmann discussed and criticized some of the most common misperceptions governments - as well as the public - hold with regard to terrorism, concluding that the solution to terrorism must come from the Middle East itself.
