Issue Brief #21: Security and Stability: German and American Cooperation in Times of Transition
In AICGS Issue Brief #21, AICGS Research Program Associate Kirsten Verclas analyzes German and American perceptions of and policies on current security issues including terrorism, the conflicts in the Middle East, and questions of nuclear nonproliferation. What are Germany's vulnerabilities in today's globalized world? A recent AICGS conference sought to explore the collection and nature of challenges that Germany faces as a state, as well as Germany's responses to these challenges. Germany was once one of Europe's worst environmental laggards, but now has transformed itself into a global leader and has embraced 'green' policies. What inspired the change? Keynes is Dead, But His Ideas are Not
On July 2, 2008, AICGS hosted an event with Dr. Peter Bofinger of the German Council of Economic Experts and Dr. Randall Henning from the Peterson Institute for International Economics focusing on the current monetary and fiscal policies of the U.S. and EU. Dr. Tim Stuchtey and Marianne Schneider discuss the event and the influence of Keynesian policies within these two currency areas in their essay, "Keynes is Dead, But His Ideas are Very Much Alive."

Policy Report #34: Overcoming the Lethargy: Climate Change, Energy Security, and the Case for a Third Industrial Revolution
In AICGS Policy Report #34, Non-Resident Senior Fellow Alexander Ochs examines the twin challenges of climate change and energy security for the U.S. and Germany, focusing on the third industrial revolution - the revolution that has to occur to transform our current combustion engine-based societies into an energy-efficient and climate-friendly world. This Policy Report resulted from a conference on "The Third Industrial Revolution: the Economic Case for Climate Policy," which occurred in March 2008.

2008 DAAD Prize for Distinguished Scholarship
Every year, AICGS awards the DAAD Prize for Distinguished Scholarship in German and European Studies in recognition of exceptional work in one of the Institute's three major areas of research. The central aim of this prize is to foster a new generation of American scholarship on Germany and encourage innovative contributions to the interdisciplinary scope of German Studies. This year's prize carries a stipend of $5,000 and will be awarded in the field of Economics; nominations must be received no later than September 12, 2008.

AICGS offers unpaid internships to undergraduate and graduate students in spring, summer, and fall. AICGS internships provide a professional and educational experience in a not-for-profit organization; the deadline for Fall 2008 applications is July 31, 2008.
