In AICGS Policy Report #34, Non-Resident Senior Fellow Alexander Ochs examines the twin challenges of climate change and energy security for the U.S. and Germany, focusing on the third industrial revolution - the revolution that has to occur to transform our current combustion engine-based societies into an energy-efficient and climate-friendly world. This Policy Report resulted from a conference on "The Third Industrial Revolution: the Economic Case for Climate Policy," which occurred in March 2008.

Ireland's Rejection of the Lisbon Treaty
The recent rejection of the EU's Lisbon Treaty has brought about a lot of head-scratching in Europe, with many leaders wondering what the next step is. Dr. Colette Mazzucelli, Assistant Professor at Molloy College and a regular contributor to the Advisor, discusses why the EU must press forward with the Lisbon Treaty, and Doug Bandow, Bastiat Scholar in Free Enterprise at the Competitive Enterprise Institute and a regular participant in AICGS events, takes a look at the greater EU picture and what Lisbon's temporary failure means for the future of the EU. German-Israeli Relations Sixty Years Later:

On July 1, 2008, AICGS hosted a conference on "German-Israeli Relations Sixty Years Later: Are They Still Special?" which was supported by the American Jewish Committee in Washington and Berlin. On the occasion of Israel's sixtieth anniversary, the conference brought together a wide-ranging group of scholars, experts, and policymakers from Germany, Israel, and the United States to examine the German-Israeli relationship from a variety of perspectives.

Terrorism in the Transatlantic Context:
The Political Dimension
On June 23, 2008, AICGS hosted a conference on "Terrorism in the Transatlantic Context: The Political Dimension." The workshop, which was supported by the Fritz Thyssen Stiftung, focused on the transatlantic understanding of terrorism and how transatlantic cooperation can support the struggle against global terrorism.

Request for Research Proposals on Advanced German and European Studies
The Berlin Program for Advanced German and European Studies is seeking applicants for doctoral and postdoctoral fellowships in all social science and humanities disciplines, including historians working on the period since the mid-19th century. The program offers up to one-year of research support at the Freie Universität Berlin; the deadline for this year's applications is December 1, 2008.

2008 DAAD Prize for Distinguished Scholarship
Every year, AICGS awards the DAAD Prize for Distinguished Scholarship in German and European Studies in recognition of exceptional work in one of the Institute's three major areas of research. The central aim of this prize is to foster a new generation of American scholarship on Germany and encourage innovative contributions to the interdisciplinary scope of German Studies. This year's prize carries a stipend of $5,000 and will be awarded in the field of Economics; nominations must be received no later than September 12, 2008.
