Creating the Transatlantic Marketplace
Daniel Hamilton of Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies writes about the strong economic ties between the EU and U.S. and how a reduction of existing barriers could bring about sustained economic growth. Hamilton also argues that a joining of the EU and the U.S. markets could generate significant benefits in growth, jobs, and consumer welfare on both sides of the Atlantic. In her essay, "Migration, Migrant Policies and Changing Cultures of Belongings: Alevis from Turkey in Germany and the United States," former DAAD/AICGS Fellow Dr. Asiye Kaya examines the Alevis, a social and religious minority group from Turkey, many of whom now live in Germany and in the United States, and their different feelings of "belonging" in new homelands.

FACET - Forum for Atlantic Climate and Energy Talks has just launched four brand new papers, featuring essays from Congressman Edward Markey, Chairman of the U.S. House of Representatives Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming, IPCC Special Report Editor Heleen de Coninck, and others. Edited by AICGS Senior Nonresident Fellow Alexander Ochs, FACET is an independent initiative which aims at enriching the transatlantic dialogue on climate change and energy by providing a forum for open exchange.

Energy Security and Climate Protection: Urgent Action is Necessary
Dr. Claudia Kemfert, Professor of Environmental and Energy Economics at Humboldt University Berlin, writes about the environmental challenges facing the world, arguing that the need for progress is incredibly urgent. Dr. Kemfert also outlines and discusses three key areas of focus which would lead to a sustainable energy future: energy efficiency, renewable energy, and carbon capture and sequestration. New AICGS Trustee: Wolfgang Ischinger
AICGS would like to welcome its newest member of the Board of Trustees, The Honorable Wolfgang Ischinger, former German Ambassador to the United States and currently Global Head of Government Relations for Allianz SE. Ambassador Ischinger was recently appointed chairman of the Munich Conference on Security Policy and brings to the Board more than thirty years of transatlantic experience.

The German Marshall Fund of the United States has launched a new website devoted to helping Europeans and the transatlantic community understand the 2008 U.S. presidential elections. "Presidential Election 2008: What Europe Needs to Know" provides a range of ways to stay informed on candidates' positions on transatlantic policy issues.
