Upcoming European Parliament Elections
Europeans will head to the polls on June 4-7 for the election of the 700-plus Members of the European Parliament. Despite a multitude of important issues facing the multinational body, turnout is supposed to be at record lows this year and parties are actively battling voter apathy. What role will the financial crisis, immigration, enlargement, and other contentious topics play in the minds of voters? Köhler's Bundespräsident Victory
On May 23, a federal convention was held to elect the next German Federal President (Bundespräsident) in a race considered to be a bellwether for the Bundestag elections in September. The two main candidates, sitting President Horst Köhler (CDU) and Professor Gesine Schwan (SPD), entered into the contest without a clear frontrunner, but by the end, Köhler was reelected by a comfortable margin. Die NATO nach dem Jubiläumsgipfel
Now that NATO has celebrated its 60th anniversary, the alliance must focus on looking forward, writes Dr. Karl-Heinz Kamp, Research Director of the NATO Defense College and a regular contributor to the Advisor. In an essay titled "Die NATO nach dem Jubiläumsgipfel," Dr. Kamp looks at NATO's potential for future cooperation and argues that a new strategic outlook is necessary to fully utilize the alliance's global standing. Governing Global Oil
On April 2-3, AICGS and the Global Public Policy Institute held a conference on "Governing Global Oil: Trends, Challenges and Policy Implications for the Transatlantic Alliance," focusing on the role of the transatlantic partnership in a policy arena that has become of increasing importance since the 2008 U.S. election. This report is based entirely upon conference proceedings and looks at the institutions that help to govern the global oil market as well as the current trends in the market, and offers recommendations for reforming the institutions in light of the trends challenging
the oil market.

Upcoming Event: German and U.S. Domestic Counterterrorism Responses
On June 8, 2009, AICGS will hold a discussion with DAAD/AICGS Fellow Dr. Dorle Hellmuth on "German and U.S. Domestic Counterterrorism Responses: Only Half a World Apart." Dr. Hellmuth will discuss the similarities between German and U.S. counterterrorism policies and how each country can best learn from the other.

Fulbright Commission's Berlin Capital Program
AICGS would like to announce that The Fulbright Commission in Berlin is accepting applications for the Berlin Capital Program 2009, which will be held from November 14 - 22, 2009. The Berlin Capital Program is designed for young American journalists and journalism students and consists of an intensive series of seminars, presentations, and visits to important German media, and German political and cultural institutions. The program will be conducted in English; the application deadline is June 30, 2009. Please do not contact AICGS about this program.

Seeking Development Program Intern
AICGS is offering an unpaid internship for fall 2009 to support the Institute's Development team in its fundraising efforts. The Development Intern will provide assistance to the Development team on several fundraising tasks, including the management and logistical execution of the Institute's main annual fundraising event, The Global Leadership Award Dinner.

Fellowship Opportunity: AICGS Visiting Fellows Program
AICGS would like to announce a new fellowship opportunity, the AICGS Visiting Fellows Program. The Visiting Fellows Program is designed to provide scholars and specialists with a base while conducting their research in Washington, D.C. Visiting Fellows should be working on issues related to the AICGS mission, which is to strengthen the German-American relationship in an evolving Europe and changing world. Applications will be accepted year round.
