AICGS Trustee Dr. Josef Joffe, publisher/editor of Die Zeit, writes that U.S. border policies in the age of terrorism have led to a decline in tourism, immigration of international scholars, and overall perceptions of the U.S. Dr. Joffe argues that the U.S. must address these issues before a greater crisis of American character takes hold. On April 28, 2008, AICGS hosted a workshop on "Globalization, Trade, and Environment: German-American Cooperation or Confrontation?" in Berlin, Germany. Sponsored by The German Marshall Fund of the United States, the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW Berlin), and the AICGS Business and Economics and Foreign and Domestic Policy Programs, this workshop focused on the German and American perspectives of globalization, trade, emerging markets, and environmental concerns..

On May 6, 2008, AICGS and the Friedrich Naumann Stiftung für die Freiheit hosted a discussion on "The U.S. Presidential Election: The German Media's Perspectives on the Candidates." The discussion focused on German perspectives on and expectations of each of the three remaining U.S. presidential candidates, and featured journalists Rüdiger Lentz of Deutsche Welle, Christoph von Marschall of Der Tagesspiegel, and Gabor Steingart of Der Spiegel.
