On Wednesday, March 21, 2007, AICGS will host a discussion on the new book, Civilizing the Enemy: German Reconstruction and the Invention of the West, by Professor Patrick T. Jackson of American University. This discussion is part of the AICGS "New Books on Germany" series; Dr. Gunther Hellmann, DAAD/AICGS Fellow and professor at Frankfurt University, will offer commentary.

AICGS is pleased to announce that Mr. Stanley H. Watters will be joining the Institute as Director of Development and External Communications as of March 22, 2007. Mr. Watters will lead our efforts in securing funding opportunities in the U.S. and Europe as well as developing and maintaining active and productive relationships with the Institute's Board of Trustees, donors, Associates members and staff.

AICGS is pleased to announce that it is now accepting applications for the DAAD/AICGS Fellowship program, sponsored by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).  The deadline for this round of the program is April 13, 2007.

On February 16, 2007, AICGS conducted a workshop entitled "Healthcare and Pension Reform in the United States and Germany," which focused on issue papers written by Dr. Michael Stolpe, Coordinator of the Kiel Institute for the World Economy's Global Health Research Network and Dr. Stephen Silvia, Director of Doctoral Studies at the School of International Service at American University.  This workshop provided insight into the complicated healthcare and pension systems in both the United States and Germany and suggested multiple ways in which both countries could cooperate and learn from one another.

Professor Andrei Markovits, Karl W. Deutsch Collegiate Professor of Comparative Politics at the University of Michigan and a member of the AICGS Senior Advisory Council, wrote "Uncouth Nation: Why Europe Dislikes America," which explores the roots of anti-Americanism in Europe and was recently reviewed in The Washington Post.

AICGS is seeking a Research Program Assistant/Publications Coordinator to support the Institute's research program and publishing activities.  The Research Program Assistant/Publications Coordinator assists the Research Director and Senior Research Associate with all aspects of AICGS research projects and works with directors and staff on AICGS publishing activities.
