After Gaza: A New Approach To Hamas
Former DAAD/AICGS Fellow Almut Möller, currently an Associate Fellow at the Austrian Institute for European and Security Policy (AIES), looks at the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and concludes that a lasting solution can only be achieved if Hamas is involved. Möller argues that because of this, the European Union needs a more differentiated and honest debate on the nature of both Hamas and Fatah. This paper first appeared in the February 2009 edition of FOKUS, an AIES publication.

Learning From Europe's Mistakes
Despite long lagging behind Europe in energy efficiency, the U.S. still has the potential to become an alternative energy role model alongside Europe, writes R. Andreas Kraemer, Director of the Ecologic Institute and a frequent participant in AICGS events. Kraemer argues that the U.S. can learn from Europe's prior missteps in increasing energy efficiency and the transatlantic partners can then work together to lead the global efforts against climate change. This essay originally appeared in the Spring 2009 edition of Internationale Politik.

Ein fordernder Multilateralismus
Dr. Gunther Hellmann, former DAAD/AICGS Fellow and professor of political science at Frankfurt's Goethe University, writes that Germany has strengthened its role in European foreign policy more than it appears on the surface. Dr. Hellmann argues that it follows that Germany deserves more of a leadership position within the EU as its foreign policy role grows. A version of this essay appeared in the February 2, 2009, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung; this essay is available in German only.
