AICGS Advisor - January 10, 2008

Happy New Year to the Friends of AICGS!

2008 is a particularly meaningful year for AICGS, as we are marking our 25th anniversary and would like to invite you to celebrate with us during the year. A quarter of a century ago, the Berlin Wall was still standing, the Soviet Union still existed and Europe was still divided. When the Institute was founded in 1983, our agenda was focused on both the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic within the framework of the Cold War. Seven years later, that agenda encompassed a unified Germany and its role in a unifying Europe. Today we are engaged in understanding how Germany and the United States are meeting global challenges. In order to enable both leaders and the public in Germany and the U.S. to understand what is at stake, AICGS has been providing insights about challenges and changes as well as solutions and opportunities involved in confronting those challenges. We need to forge a new agenda in order to build the basis of a global community with the same stability and security which has marked transatlantic relations over many decades. The German-American partnership plays a vital role in shaping this new agenda and AICGS is committed to supporting this partnership.

We look forward to welcoming you to our events during this special anniversary year and to sharing our work with you for many years to come. We send you our best wishes for a successful and enjoyable 2008.

Best regards,
Jack Janes, Executive Director
