2008 DAAD Prize for Distinguished Scholarship
in German and European Studies

Economics / Political Economy / Economic History
Every year, the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies (AICGS) awards the DAAD Prize for Distinguished Scholarship in German and European Studies in recognition of exceptional work in one of the Institute's three major areas of research: Foreign & Domestic Policy Studies; Business & Economics; and Society, Culture, and Politics. The central aim of this prize is to foster a new generation of American scholarship on Germany and encourage innovative contributions to the interdisciplinary scope of German Studies. This year's prize will be awarded in the field of Economics.
A jury composed of several of the most highly respected scholars in the field is charged with selecting the winner. This year's prize carries a stipend of $5,000 and will be awarded at the Institute's Global Leadership Award Dinner on November 13, 2008, in New York City. Previous recipients of the prize include Barry Eichengreen, University of California, Berkeley; Jennifer Hunt, McGill University; and Caroline Fohlin, Johns Hopkins University.
As a rule, awardees must be members of a university faculty or research institute staff in the United States at mid-career and be nominated by a peer. They must also be American citizens or residents. American candidates who received their doctorate in Germany may also be nominated. This year, candidates from the fields of Economics, Political Economy, and Economic History may be nominated. The chief criterion for selection is an outstanding publication record on German domestic economic issues or European economic issues as they relate to Germany's deepening integration with its EU partners. Nominations must include:
-
A nominating letter of no more than three pages;
-
A current C.V. of the nominee with publication list; and
-
The names of three other leading scholars familiar with the nominee's work.
Nominations must be received no later than September 12, 2008, and should be sent, preferably by e-mail, to Jessica Riester at jriester@aicgs.org or to:
