Employment Opportunities - Internships at AICGS
................................................................................................................
AICGS offers unpaid internships to undergraduate and graduate students in the spring, summer, and fall. AICGS internships provide a professional and educational experience in a not-for-profit organization that aims to strengthen the German-American relationship. Interns typically are assigned to projects on a priority basis and are exposed to the Institute's different departments (Research/Publications, Development/Outreach, Public Policy, Administration/Finance). AICGS Internships aim to:
-
Introduce interns to all aspects (administrative, programming, development, research) of an American non-profit public-policy institute;
-
Involve interns in ongoing AICGS projects and events of the three program areas: Business & Economics, Foreign & Domestic Policy, and Society, Culture & Politics;
-
Provide opportunities for participation in similar events in Washington, D.C., organized by other policy institutions or think tanks.
Interns may be assigned to a particular program area depending on their field of study and foci. All interns will be involved in the following tasks:
-
Event management (including contacting participants, event set-up/take-down, event registration and follow-up, and publications mailings)
-
Taking notes and writing summaries at AICGS events for the AICGS website and electronic newsletter
-
Daily English and German language newspaper survey
-
Contact database work
-
Research support for Institute staff and fellows for various projects and events
-
Administrative/Financial project support
Interns will be evaluated at the mid-point and at the end of their internship and will be asked to provide AICGS with an evaluation of the internship program and their experience at AICGS.
Duration and Application Deadlines:
Interns are expected to work between 20 and 35 hours a week during the following cycles:
Spring: January-May. Application deadline is October 31
Summer: June-August. Application deadline is March 15
Fall: September-December. Application deadline is August 27
Qualifications:
AICGS accepts students from a variety of fields of studies. Students should have an interest in transatlantic relations and Europe/Germany. Knowledge of the German language is helpful but not essential. Strong computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel) and Internet research skills are required. Interns must have strong written and verbal communication and organizational skills, as well as attention to detail. Interns should be highly motivated to work in a small organization on a variety of projects.
Foreign nationals who apply must be eligible for a J-1 visa and must cover the costs associated with obtaining the visa. If already in the U.S., they must be eligible to intern at a U.S. organization.
Application:
To apply, send your resume, cover letter (outlining applicant's reason for applying for the internship and his/her availability), and two writing samples (in English, no more than six pages) preferably via e-mail to:

Testimony from previous AICGS Interns:
"When I got accepted as an intern for AICGS, I knew I had been given a great opportunity, but the actual internship experience was so much more rewarding than I could possibly have expected. While interning with AICGS, I got an in-depth look at the work of DC think tanks, as well as the intricacies of transatlantic relations. In addition to working closely with institute staff, I was able to meet politicians and diplomats from both the U.S. and Europe. Since AICGS is affiliated with Johns Hopkins University, I also had the opportunity to attend lectures given by eminent political leaders at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. Altogether, I highly recommend interning with AICGS if you are looking for a first-hand experience of DC political life."
