2014 DAAD Prize in German and European Studies to be awarded to Dr. Stephen J. Silvia, American University.

Congratulations to Dr. Stephen J. Silvia of American University, the recipient of the 2014 DAAD Prize for Distinguished Scholarship in German and European Studies for his outstanding academic work in the field of Economics/Political Economy/Economic History.  Dr. Silvia’s recent book, Holding the Shop Together: German Industrial Relations in the Postwar Era, is a comprehensive analysis of postwar German industrial relations.  The book explores the evolution of the particular way of managing industrial relations in Germany and stresses how important they are for understanding how the country’s largely consensus-driven economy works.

Dr. Silvia is an internationally recognized scholar in the field of comparative industrial relations, where his research has focused on Germany, the European Union, and the United States. He has also written about a wide variety of economic issues including public pensions, eastern German economic developments, employment and unemployment in Germany, and the impact of the euro on European labor markets. Dr. Silvia’s current research is on the industrial relations practices of German automobile “transplants” in the United States.

Dr. Silvia is the 20th recipient of the DAAD Prize, whose central aim is to foster excellent American scholarship on Germany and encourage innovative contributions to the interdisciplinary scope of German Studies. AGI is grateful to the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) for its collaboration on and support of this prestigious award.
